about

Imagine the shock! A warlike bunch of Scottish and English nobles go to what is now Germany to bring back the man who will become George I, the first Hanoverian king of the United Kingdom. What do they find him doing? Fencing? Riding? Grinding the faces of the poor? No - he is gardening. Shock gave way to disgust if this mordant, satirical Jacobite song is even 5% accurate. It must have been one of those 'What HAVE we done?' moments. The song is better known as The wee, wee German Lairdie, 'wee' being Scots for small. Elspeth puts a lot of energy into this tongue-twisting, up tempo version, which is always a popular showpiece in sessions and on stage.
